HYUNGRYUL HARRY BAIK / TO DO RESEARCH WITH ME

To do research with me

Guidance for prospective students

I use the following minimum guidelines when supervising undergraduate and graduate students. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Research interests and inquiries

The group welcomes students interested in various areas of low-dimensional topology and geometric group theory, as well as students interested in applying topology to other fields. In particular, I would like to collaborate actively with Urban Science.

Please read about my research interests first. Please email me to ask whether I am accepting students, and arrange an appointment by email before coming to meet me.

Recommendations for graduate study abroad

I write recommendations for graduate study abroad for at most 3 students per year, and for at most 10 schools per student.

Individual research and graduation research

I restrict individual research and graduation research to students who have already had substantial discussions with me about research areas and topics, will apply for URP with me, and will conduct research before or after that project.

I accept students for individual research only if they intend to write their URP proposal themselves.

I accept applications only from students who have already done a reasonable amount of study and genuinely intend to participate in research. Please do not send an email that mainly emphasizes how interested you are in topology.

If you simply want to read a book and study, there is no need to receive course credit under the label of individual research. Study on your own in your spare time, and email me if you would like advice on which book to read or need someone to ask when you get stuck.

Undergraduate Research Participation (URP)

For undergraduates interested in doing URP with me: it is difficult for me to undertake URP with students who have no knowledge of topology and intend to start learning it from me as they go. At a minimum, you should have taken both undergraduate Topology and Combinatorial Topology, and attended the topology seminar several times. After gaining basic knowledge and suitable motivation, you should have decided that you would like to try research yourself. For such students, we will find a topic together and match you with a graduate student suited to that topic to conduct research together.

Doctoral students

For those who would like me to supervise their doctoral studies: having already taken, or currently being enrolled in, topology courses through graduate Algebraic Topology 1 in the KAIST curriculum is a non-negotiable prerequisite.

You must know undergraduate linear algebra, modern algebra, real analysis, complex analysis, differential geometry, and differential equations. I would also like you to know undergraduate number theory, combinatorics, and probability; knowing at least one of these latter subjects well is sufficient. You must be able to convince me that you know the material. If your grades are not good, you should at least be able to answer questions about what I consider the important content of each topic.

I know this is difficult, but I would like you to have encountered research topics through topology seminar talks or other literature and to have at least a rough idea of the direction you would like to pursue.

Master’s students

For those who would like me to supervise their master’s studies: even if you join my group as a master’s student, I assume that we will both do our best to continue working together through your doctorate. Please apply only if you agree with this expectation. Except in very exceptional cases, I assume that you already know the (algebraic) topology taught at the KAIST undergraduate level.

As with the expectations for doctoral students above, you must know undergraduate linear algebra, modern algebra, real analysis, complex analysis, differential geometry, and differential equations. I would also like you to know undergraduate number theory, combinatorics, and probability, and to know at least one of these latter subjects well.

I intend to accept students who already meet these expectations, or for whom there is reason to expect that they will meet them within two years.
